Zeke is becoming quite a good pretend reader. He has a great memory and is just beginning to read. When he heard the "Cars" book a couple times, he started "reading" it at bedtime to the girls. The first time he did this, I stopped him mid-sentence, raised both my pointer fingers skyward and said emphatically, "You're freakin' me out" because he was.
That delighted and amused the girls no end. They started repeating the phrase and then giggling uncontrollably. That little phrase is so well learned that all I need to do now is make the two-pointer-fingers-pointing-skyward gesture and they yell out, "You're freakin' me out!"
Lotsa fun at the Adamses.

He's not pretend reading, he's pre-reading. And that's a necessary step to reading. Encourage it as much as possible. There's plenty of time to "teach" him the phonics of it all later. Kids that think of themselves as readers will be good readers. Early reading is looking not just at the words but also at the pictures and just thinking about what words make sense. This is part of how young kids "decode" words. Good for Zeke!! He's on his way.
