Dances With Wolves - - The Home Edition

Yesterday, Mary Jo was preparing for a crying jag. She stood still with her hands at her side clenched into little pudgy fists. It reminded me of the character played by Mary McDonnell in the movie "Dances with Wolves", Stands with a fist. Then Mary Jo fell to the floor in full out tantrum. What would my family be named in that era?

Mary Jo: Cries-on-floor
Zeke: Picks-on-Sister
Annie: Scoots-on-butt

What do you do when she throws a fit like this at home? What about if you're in a store or church? I'm looking for suggestions to deal with my 3 yr. old.

Kathie: From my sister, the mother of non-tantrum-throwing children. When she's about to blow, hush everyone and say "Sssh. Sissy is throwing a tantrum. Everyone watch." Then praise her for an artfully done performance. This throws them off completely and works most times.

Another route: Ignore as long as possible. Then impose a three minute time out in a room far away from all the fun.

Another route: recognize a tantrum as a scream of LOW BLOOD SUGAR and give a simple carb stat.

The girls don't really go out much and when we take them out, they are well fed and rested. We go home if they're not behaving because no one else should suffer because of my kid.
